Stephen Fendyke Engineer. Tech. Artificial Intelligence. PhD Astrophysics.

About Me

I'm currently at the early-stage tech startup Cogna in the UK, working on using state-of-the-art AI to boost industrial productivity.
Before taking this position, I was the sensor systems lead at the self-driving car startup Five. I joined the Five team pre-series A in 2016 and remained with the company through our two funding rounds, $100 million raised, growth to a team of 150+ and finally acquisition by Bosch in 2022. After acquisition, I worked as an Engineering Manager alongside colleagues in Bosch's Cross-Domain Computing Solutions (XC) division.

As well as writing code in C++ and Python, I led on commissioning our autonomous vehicle fleet and had responsibility for sourcing, evaluating, integrating and supporting the cameras, lidars, radars, GNSS and other sensor systems.

My skills and areas of professional interest include AI, LLMs, autonomous vehicle sensor technology, software engineering in Python and C++, robotics and ROS, data science, leadership and management in tech, and Agile management practices. I have experience with (amongst other technologies) Docker, AWS, git and CI/CD with GitLab. I also enjoy having the opportunity to communicate my company's work and have presented at large international conferences as well as giving invited talks at universities.
